Is it necessary to have a doctor’s referral to see a hand therapist?
Hand therapists are able to assess and treat you (case dependent) before you see a doctor. Often therapy is the first course of treatment recommended by doctors to treat many hand/arm problems eg: Arthritis, tendonitis, sprains, strains and dislocations.
However, hand therapists work closely with surgeons/doctors and will often treat you in conjunction with a surgeon/doctor and refer you for a surgeon’s’ opinion should there be any concern or doubt about your diagnosis or progress.
What can I expect from my first session?
A detailed history about your injury/condition will be taken. An assessment will be taken of your injury, including how much your joints can move, how swollen your injured part is and what your current level of strength is (if this is appropriate). Your condition and or injury will be discussed, what it could possibly be the problem and what can be done to treat it. A cost and time effective treatment plan will be discussed. Together a treatment plan, course and goals are established.
Is it covered by medical aid?
